Synopsis:

Chelle isn’t a typical 13-year-old girl—she doesn’t laugh with friends, play sports, or hang out at the mall after school. Instead, she navigates a world well beyond her years.

Life in Dawson, ND spins on as she grasps at people, pleading for someone to save her—to return her to the simple childhood of unicorns on her bedroom wall and stories on her father’s knee.

When Troy Christiansen walks into her life, Chelle is desperate to believe his arrival will be her salvation. So much so, she forgets to save herself. After experiencing a tragedy at school, her world begins to crack, causing a deeper scar in her already fragile psyche.

Follow Chelle’s twisted tale of modern adolescence, as she travels down the rabbit hole into a reality none of us wants to admit actually exists.

Review:

I should start with wow and holly ****. I am new in the new adult genre; actually this is my very first book. It was intense and shocking and I loved it. I would have never expected to read about this kind of taboo subjects in a book.

White Chalk presents the difficult life of a thirteen years old girl, Chelle. She is smart but doesn’t see herself that way, she is pretty but she thinks she is just plain. She doesn’t feel loved and most of the time she feels alone. It’s a sad story, but you can’t help but love it. White Chalk just shows us life like it is: pink at times, but also black, the real world in which the winner is not always the good side.

I liked Chelle, even though she barley acts her age. She is mature even if that is because she had no choice and she is in a constant search for acceptance and love. I was surprised to find about her relationship with her teacher. Every time she was with him I had to remind myself that she is in fact thirteen. I honestly thought that she was seduced by her teacher, and it started that way, but the relation continued because of her. She felt loved and wanted and yes, it was the wrong person, but I think I understood that.

When Troy showed up in her life I thought that she finally found her half. She had moments when she acted her age when she was with him, but in the end I think that I hated him the most. It’s like I built this image of him: the nice guy that gets along with Chelle, the only one that seems to stay with her because he just wanted to stay with her, but the last few pages of the book made me hate him so much.

*SPOILERS* Troy is a selfish ass, that only looks for himself and dared to take advantage of a fragile girl. I mean, she was fragile, all bad things that could happen to her, happened and he knew that. *SPOILERS ENDED*

Anyway, besides Chelle I liked only one other character and that was Cat. She tried to save her, but she started slow as not to scare her and in the end…it was too late.

White Chalk was a heartbreaking story and I loved it. I want to thank Pavarti K Tyler for the chance to read an amazing book.

Thank you for the fabulous review. I loved reading what you thought of each character. Personally, I loved Troy, but he’s just a boy himself, as confused and scared as Chelle is. I have a special place in my heart for him.

I know, but in the end he will always be the one to blame. The way I see it Chelle was at that point in the most fragile state. She was at that point in her life that everything turned bad and for a moment with Troy she had hope, until everything shattered around her.
